looking forward: resolutions, or something like them

I usually do this every year but then never look at it or even think about it again, but I think it’s a generally good idea to intend to do many things, no matter how quickly you forget or how short you fall from those goals.

Anyrate, here are all the things I intend to do in 2015. For the first time in years, none of them have to do with writing a novel.

First and most importantly: Get married.

It’s been a long journey and I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready for this kind of thing, I’m excited. Hopefully I can be worthy of the beautiful lady who’s decided she’s fine with spending her life with me. It’s going to be a very interesting four months leading up to the marriage, and the biggest thing I need to do is make sure I’m ready to be a good husband. So, if you have advice, lay it on me!

Improve my physical health.

I’m heavier than I’ve ever been, and I find it unpleasant. I would like to lose about 15 to 25 pounds, which would still put me much heavier than I was even just three years ago, but I think that’s where my weight is meant to be. Right now I’m at about 190, which is probably normal for a person my size, but it feels weird to me. When I came home from Korea about three years ago, I was at 155. Admittedly, I was quite scrawny and I had been basically underweight since I was fifteen, so I think the weight I should be at is somewhere between where I am now and where I was three years ago. Also, I want to be able to do twenty consecutive pull ups, which is something that I could do not so long ago, but now I can barely do three. I’ve already increased my pushup capacity pretty dramatically [in August I could barely do fifteen consecutively and now I can do three sets of twenty without any real problem, though I’ve not tried to test how many consecutive pushups I can do]. So I’ve become physically much stronger in the last three months, but I haven’t really got rid of this extra weight, which is part two of this recent health plan.

2014 was the first year I didn’t read 100 books in I don’t know how long, and I also read very few indie press books. Fewer than I’ve read since sort of jumping into the scene in 2010. That trend will probably continue as I’ve no real plans to read that many indie press books this year. Most of what I want to read are fantasy books, and especially those written by women, as I’ve read too few. In fact, nearly all of them have been written by Ursula K Le Guin, who’s probably one of my favorite authors ever. And I know it’s silly to judge a gender by a single person, but I’m just going to assume that most female SFF writers are awesome. Also, after loving Liu Cixin’s Three Body Problem, I intend on reading whatever Chinese science fiction is available in English. I don’t really intend on reading any solid number. Not making one of those goals on goodreads. Just going to read whatever I read. And since most fantasy books are pretty gigantic, it just makes sense that I’ll be reading fewer books.

Play more videogames.

I have so many games I want to play! Most of these will be indie RPGs and platformers, and probably some old school RPGs as well, like Suikoden I & II. This probably goes hand in hand with reading fewer books, because I sort of plan on being more artistically spread out this year, while I try to balance a lot of different aspects of my life. Like my relationship, my writing, my reading, and on and on.

Create my first videogame.

So maybe a big part of playing all these games is research so I can create my own, but this is something I’ve wanted to do for a while. Actually, all my life, but I never realised such a thing was possible until Kyle Muntz started making his game. I sort of assumed I needed to break into the industry before I could ever make a game of my own. But RPGmaker is a gamechanger! I only wish I had known about it longer. But, yes, I plan on starting quite small. Like maybe something that only requires an hour or two to complete, and then gradually build myself up to a proper game. Maybe ten to twenty hours long. Chelsea and I also have plans to eventually make a videogame together.

Watch a film every day and review one every week.

This is something I attempted last year, but was interrupted by certain aspects of life, especially the job I did that stole all my time and energy. Since quitting that, my life has opened up again, and I think I can make this happen. I mean, I love films and I love talking about them, but I’ve watched far fewer in the last couple years. Probably because I was always trying to write novels, which is partly why I’m not planning on writing any novels this year. I’d rather do a lot of everything, than a few of one thing.

Publish work created by other people.

This is also something I’ve wanted to do for a few years, and I have plans to make it happen this year. Many things need to be planned and considered, but I think I should be able to make this happen this year. At least by the end of the year. Maybe. But I want to facilitate the work by amazing writers I know,a dn maybe also use the same platform to publish videogames by other people.

Start drawing again.

This was my greatest pleasure as a kid but something I’m, unfortunately, quite bad at. But I want to start drawing again. Maybe try to get some sketching done every day, or at least a little bit each week. No long term plans for what to do with this, but I just want to start doing it again.

Continue with Girl with Ears.

It’s always been planned as a serialised novel, but I also want it to be a graphic novel, or at least an illustrated one. I absolutely love this story, but we’ll see if I can get myself to keep pushing forward with the story of Tao. You can get Part One for a dollar.

Write a short story every week.

I did this back in 2013 and I think it was a brilliant exercise. I mostly discovered that I’m bad at writing short stories, but I’m very happy with most of those short stories. I think at least half of them were pretty solid and a handful of them are actually quite amazing, if I do say so myself. So that’s one of the goals. To keep writing short stories, mostly because it keeps me creating every week. This last year has been a poor one on the artistic front, and so I want to really push myself again. I’ll be posting these right here on the blog like I did last time.

Write a poem every day.

This is similar to the above and it shouldn’t be too difficult. I mean, it’s better than cramming about 100 poems into a weekend, like I usually do when writing a poetry collection. These poems will probably be anything from haiku to big sprawling structureless messes of language, which is kind of what I love. I’m not sure where I’ll publish these things. I might just hold onto them for myself.


Since Twilight of the Wolves has been sort of a failure and one of the most disappointing things of my writing life. I put everything I had into this and no one seems to even want to read it or enjoy reading it. It’s going to be the setting for many future projects, including Girl with Ears, but it’s been so disappointing, the reception it’s received. Anyrate, to try to get over this, I plan on doing a lot of worldbuilding that isn’t narrative. I may even create a language for the world. But mostly I’m doing a lot of cultural and historical stuff, and create more and more of the world. Eventually, hopefully I’ll be able to finally write another novel here.

But, yes, these are the things I intend to do this year. I’m already a day behind on the film and the poetry because I’m pretty ill right now and spent most of yesterday feeling awful. But these things are meant to be measured on average rather than force myself to do it every single time. Like, when I did a story every week in 2013, there were a few months I wrote zero stories, but I completed 52 for the year. Or, I completed more than that, but I published that many on here.

So it goes.
